15.1 Avoid Instructor Plagiarism
Distance learning is limited with what can be used in the classrooms. An instructor can use unlimited resources in a traditionally seated class, related to course content and relevancy of the material. However, in an online class, the material has to be condensed or limited for viewing by distance learning students.
Material for your course can easily be found online, but you have to be careful what and how you use that material in your course.

What is "Fair Use?"
Fair Use is a concept enforced by the U.S. government identifying that some applications of copyrighted materials do not require reference. There are multiple classifications of Fair Use which dictate what materials may or may not be used for, as well as what degree of referencing is required.

How to Avoid Copyright Infringement
- Cite everything appropriately in either MLA or APA format, based on the type of course and instructor preference.
- If you are not sure if something should be cited or not, cite it just in case.
- Use images that are either in the public domain, or have a Creative Commons license. Avoid Bing and Google for finding images, and use some of the sites suggested by the Library.
