4.1 Archiving a Blackboard Course
How many backups have you made of your computer? Archiving a Blackboard course is like making duplicates of your files on your computer, or backing up the entire computer. Making backups is really easy, especially in Blackboard, and requires only a small amount of time and effort. The process secures all of your content, files, and student grades in an active course so you don't risk losing valuable data.
To start, sign into a course. Locate the Control Panel below the Course Menu and left-click on Packages and Utilities. Select Export/Archive course. This will direct you to the Export/Archive Course page.
To start, sign into a course. Locate the Control Panel below the Course Menu and left-click on Packages and Utilities. Select Export/Archive course. This will direct you to the Export/Archive Course page.
Looking on the Export/Archive Course page, you will notice there are two buttons. The first, Export Package, allows you to package your course contents, but Exporting does not save user activity, including grades. The second button, Archive Course, is the function where we archive the course in Blackboard. This means a permanent copy of the course, including contents, activity, and grades, is saved within the Blackboard LMS.
After clicking the Archive Course button, you will be directed to the Archive Course page. This page contains two important sections. Section one is for Copy Options. This allows you to decide if you wish to preserve your gradebook data. Section two is for File Attachments. This allows you to calculate the size of the file you are about to create, and to choose which files you do not wish to include within the archiving process. Always check the box next to Include Grade Center History. This will increase the file size of your package, but this is the most important component you wish to preserve.
Always click the Calculate Size button before archiving a course to make sure that your course does not exceed the file size limitation, or that the file is too big for you to download. Depending on your internet speed, downloading a 650 MB sized file could take minutes or hours (if not longer).
The final step is to click Submit. After you have submitted the archive process, the system will return you to the Export/Archive Course page where you should see a notice in a green bar that says Success: This action has been queued. An email will be sent when the process is complete.

After receiving the email, return to the Export/Archive Course page and you should see a copy of your archive course file waiting for you to download or share.
Next Step
When you have completed these activities, make sure to go to Week 1>Submit Assignments in your Blackboard Faculty Training Course and submit the "I have completed these assignments" statement so your instructors know to grade your work. You will not receive credit for these activities if you do not do this step!
When you have submitted the statement, move on to Section 4.2 Chapter 4 Activities.
